As a child in the 1970s, Karen Terio wasn’t allowed to watch much television, but wildlife specials were allowed. This is how she discovered the work of Jane Goodall, who was studying the behavior of wild chimpanzees in Gombe National Park, in western Tanzania. Watching National Geographic documentaries about Goodall’s intrepid and pioneering work with wild chimpanzees excited and inspired the young girl.
