How Did Dolphins Help Us Discover A New “Essential” Fatty Acid That Slows Down Aging?


Aging can be a worrying process for many people, especially in the age of social media where new ideas for promoting a longer, healthier life seem to appear every day. From new “life-extending” products to prescriptive diets to grueling exercise routines, there are many competing claims about what your body needs age well.

In particular, the team wanted to understand why some of these marine mammals developed age-related conditions while others did not.
“In caring for older Navy dolphins, we found that about 1 in 3 dolphins developed aging-related diseases similar to those in humans, including insulin resistance, anemia, high cholesterol, fatty liver, and chronic inflammation,” explained Venn-Watson, who has previously worked with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO). With funding from the Office of Naval Research, Venn-Watson and colleagues applied metabolomics – the in-depth study of small molecules involved in cellular processes, used in disease diagnosis and drug discovery – to see which small molecules in the dolphins’ all-fish diet and in their blood serum predicted the healthiest individuals. It was here that they made their first discoveries.
“That’s when we first discovered that higher dietary and circulating levels of C15:0, an odd-chain dietary saturated fat, predicted healthier aging in dolphins,” Venn-Watson added.
The team then fed the dolphins a modified fish-based diet containing higher levels of C15:0, which led to improved health. This even completely relieved anemia in all affected dolphins within three months. Through further research, they were able to show that C15:0 not only reduces the risk of developing chronic diseases associated with aging, but it can also reverse them.
“Based on a decade of Navy-funded research demonstrating that C15:0 is an active and beneficial nutrient for dolphins and humans, we developed Fatty15 to provide a pure, bioavailable C15:0 supplement that could protect our long-term health and promote healthy aging for all,” Venn-Watson explained.
“Wonderfully, in the last decade since our initial discovery, more than 100 peer-reviewed studies have been published by independent teams contributing to the totality of the evidence – reconfirming and expanding on C15:0 as a foundational nutrient. Just as importantly, no peer-reviewed study has shown that C15:0 is not a foundational nutrient.”
Advantages of C15:0
The last essential fatty acids discovered were omega-3s in 1929. These essential polyunsaturated fats are essential for maintaining a healthy heart, brain, eyes and joints. Like its “distant cousin” – they belong to the same large family of fatty acids but have distinct functions in the body – C15:0 appears to offer a range of health benefits, including improved metabolism, liver, red blood cell and cholesterol health. In vitro and cellular studies have also shown that C15:0 improves mitochondrial function in cells by 45%, which may contribute to overall cognitive and physical performance. “[S]Studies support that if we don’t have enough C15:0 in our cell membranes, they can become fragile and susceptible to ferroptosis. In turn, ferroptosis is known to accelerate aging and the onset of multiple aging-related conditions, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, liver disease, and cognitive decline. Simply put, C15:0 deficiency accelerates the general aging process,” added Venn-Watson.
“Given our population-wide decline in dietary C15:0 intake due to decreased consumption of dairy fat (our primary source of C15:0), this concept of deficiency syndrome has received increased attention.”
Recover saturated fats
In January 2026, the U.S. Department of Agriculture released its new Dietary Guidelines for Americans, which, for the first time in 50 years, reversed its stance on full-fat dairy products. For decades, Americans have been asked to reduce their intake of dietary saturated fat, primarily by avoiding dairy fat. However, more and more research has shown that not all saturated fats are the same; some are harmful, like even-chain saturated fats like C16:0 (found in red meat), but others are essential for a healthy body, like C15:0.
