Limedyke Fire burns in Trinity County, smoke seen on Highway 299

Motorists traveling on Highway 299 in Trinity County may see smoke coming from the Limedyke Fire, which is burning in rugged mountainous terrain in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest, the Forest Service said Friday.
The fire burned 4 to 5 acres as of 8:30 a.m. Friday, May 8, a day after it started, said Tom Stokesberry, a spokesman for the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. It spread at a moderate speed through dry wood, brush and snags Friday morning.
The Limedyke is not under control, but “fire line construction is underway,” Stokesberry said Friday morning.

Hikers and others recreating in the forest should avoid the area, Stokesberry said. “Be sure to put out all campfires and never leave a campfire unattended.”

The Smokejumpers first landed in the forest and fought the fire on the ground Thursday. They had to hike over rugged, steep terrain to reach the fire, Stokesberry said, while crews fought the fire from the air by dropping drops of water on the flames.
The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection is helping the Forest Service suppress fires, he said.
