Local business owner feels impact of overseas military operations

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Many eyes are on developments in Iran and Israel, especially here in the Hampton Roads.
With the USS Gerald R Ford, the flagship of Carrier Strike Group 12, being overseas during these strikes, family and community members here in Hampton Roads are concerned.
Rodney McKeithan, a 20-year veteran and barbershop owner, relies on military business. In fact, he says about 90% of his business comes from the military sector.
It is almost impossible for him to miss what is happening in the global conflict. One of his first clients back then was the wife of a sailor assigned to the USS Gerald R Ford.
“She came with her sons to get a haircut because she’s actually waiting for her husband to come home,” McKeithan said. “And she heard the news, and she was pretty upset this morning.”
McKeithan can empathize with military families.
“Always, always,” McKeithan says. “Prayers for the safety of the sailors and the entire military, of course. I’ve also been stationed here most of my time, so I completely understand that.”
He acknowledges that more ships and squadrons could answer the call of duty, saying that is the nature of the job.
NBC News reported that the USS George HW Bush, which is also based in Norfolk, could respond to the escalating tensions.
10 On Your Side will continue to monitor developments and speak with those directly affected.
