Police identify driver shot, woman killed in chaotic NY incident

New York State Police on Monday identified the erratic driver shot and killed by a trooper after the driver struck and killed a 79-year-old woman during a chaotic encounter in LaFayette, Onondaga County, early Sunday morning.
The erratic driver
Officers were called to Shute Road in LaFayette around 1:35 a.m. Sunday, April 12, for reports of an erratic driver driving through residential yards at a high rate of speed, according to state police.
That driver was identified Monday as Irene McIntyre, 46, of East Syracuse in Onondaga County, troopers said.
Woman hit by car
McIntyre is accused of hitting a woman with his car before police arrived on scene.
A man attempted to stop McIntyre by moving his car into the path of his car. McIntyre, police say, rammed his car into his stopped vehicle. The man was still inside.
A trooper at the scene saw McIntyre “operate the vehicle in a manner that endangered those present,” including running the already injured woman to the ground again, as well as striking a second man who was trying to help the injured woman, according to state police.
Driver shot by police
Despite repeated orders from troopers to stop, McIntyre did not. An officer fired a division-issued firearm and struck McIntyre, who was alone in her car. She was taken to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse, where she was pronounced dead, according to state police.
Soldier and slain woman identified
State police also identified the man who shot and killed McIntyre as Trooper Michael A. Sharshon. He has been a trooper for over four years and is assigned to the LaFayette State Police barracks. He was placed on “critical incident leave” after the fatal shooting, which is common when the actions of an on-duty trooper result in serious physical injury or death to another person, according to state police.
The woman who was struck twice by McIntyre’s car before dying was identified as Cheryl Miron, 79, of Fayetteville, Onondaga County.
The investigation continues
The incident was captured on the body-worn cameras of the responding troopers, according to state police. The department has not released the footage due to ongoing investigations by the New York State Police and the New York Attorney General’s Office.
