“We need to produce a lot more food, but on less land with fewer inputs,” says CEO Cian Duggan, who spun out Resurrect Bio from the Sainsbury Laboratory in 2021. “Genetics is the solution.”
Pathogens can decimate crops. Potato blight causes 50 million pounds per year in losses in the UK and 1 billion annually in all of Europe, says Duggan. Microorganisms use proteins called effectors to bind the plant’s immune receptors and hijack its defenses. The plants, meanwhile, respond by evolving new immune receptors to overcome these pathogen effectors. Resurrect Bio has stepped into this dance between plant and pathogen by developing a workflow that predicts what proteins need to be tweaked to restore the plant’s original immune activity.
