Teachers should not need lists of wishes and advice pots

Bronx: I am a high school teacher in a school in a charter in the south of the Bronx. I also grew up by attending a Public School of Title I, where I saw my teachers go beyond to give us not only knowledge but love. Today, I do the same, often without the resources I need.

Each year, I create Amazon wishes lists and donor campaigns. I use the Buy coffee platform to collect funds for basic needs in class, snacks, books and hygiene products. I even washed my students’ uniforms to help them respect our dress code when they did not have access to laundry.

I know teachers like me who work for 10 hours but still cannot afford to live in the city, or even in the same communities that we teach. Many now communicate almost two hours in each direction because the rise in power has pushed us to New York. According to the National Education Association, teachers in the United States spend an average of $ 823 from its pocket for school supplies. More than 90% receive no refund. About one in six works a second job. Many others, like me, count on online platforms just to stay afloat.

It is not durable. It’s not only. And that’s not what our students deserve. Each elected official who has just won a primary and each candidate for the town hall must be careful. The teachers are exhausted, have evaluated and are invited to carry the weight of a broken whole system. We need more than praise. We need real policy and support. Brigette Brantley

Disqualifying

Brick, NJ: re “31 police recruits not dismissed for the moment” (July 16): in 1964, during my investigation process, the sergeants did all the investigations. I had an excessive ticket and it was a certain concern. Years later, the administration approved the hiring of candidates with criminal convictions in their file. Many crimes are reduced to crimes in the advocacy. NYC deserves better. Only the best with clean recordings should be hired by the NYPD. There are many other public service jobs than candidates with a bad file can apply. NYPD is a work of responsibility. Who is responsible for this parody? Billy Rath

Sharp increase

Bronx: I am a double survivor of 75 year old cancer. On Wednesday, I received a letter from United Healthcare concerning a strong increase in my premiums from January 2026. This is disturbing because it reflects an increase of 17.9%. My premium is now $ 394 per month, and it will drop to $ 464.50, or $ 70.50 more per month. It is already difficult to pay the current premium, but I try to cut the corners to be able to allow it. I live on a fixed income, as I am sure that most of the elderly do it, and with food prices with everything else, it is difficult to reach both ends. I understand that there must be increases, but there should be a ceiling as to the height that they can raise it every year. I hope that all those who have received this written letter, and I hope that the governor will take the time to look in this area. Fran Boffa

Local access

Manhattan: re “Health Care Construction helps families of workers” (OP-ED, July 16): although we agree that our city needs more hospital facilities, we do not agree with the support of the renovation of Lenox Hill hospital in La Vooy Watt. Given the concentration of academic installations in the middle of Manhattan, there are already more than 10 hospital beds for 1,000 people in the Lenox Hill district. On the other hand, with the recent closure of the Beth Israel Medical Center in Lower Manhattan, there are approximately 0.4 beds per 1,000 people for those who live south of the 23rd street, the writer lives in Harlem. He and many other New Yorkers would be better served with the improvement of hospital facilities in their own neighborhoods. The Public Health and Health Planning Council should not be rubber plans for new hospital beds without taking local needs into account. Marc H. Lavietes

Touch a tribute

Staten Island: to Mrs. Smith, mother of the firefighter of Fdny Leon W. Smith, died September 11: May God bless you and grant you peace in your heart and soul. Your son is in paradise and he is always with you. Peace and love. Marie Manzi-Mandia

‘Verkakte’

Conduck, Li: in Responate to Andrew Cuomo’s Suggestion that Eric Adams Drop Out of the Race (“Cuomo Will Double Down Vs. Mamdani,” July 14), Adams’ Reelection Campaign Chairman, Frank Carone, Stated: “To Even Suggest that Mayor Adams, with his record Yorkers and Bringing the City to where we Today Post -Cavid, Should Somehow Agree To A The Fakakta Survey suggests either an illusion or arrogance. Yvonne Fitzner

Send the message

Manhattan: The former governor, who had to resign in disgrace, must learn that no means no. He apparently did not learn from the many women he harassed sexually. Voters of the Democratic Party said no, Andrew! Go away. And a real nycer would have gone to NY1 during the primary and spoke to Errol Louis or Pat Kiernan. Sex Pest Cuomo is a transparent and pandering liar who is as he did for Covid. He thinks we have forgotten. We didn’t do it. Cuomo is a liar and a predator, and we remember. Go, sex-promotion. We said no and we want it. Brenda Quinn

Let the voters decide

Manhattan: I could not be more in disagreement with the opinion of July 12 by L. Joy Williams and Susan Lerner, “keep NYC Open Primary off the vote of this year”. The closed primary system, which the authors defends, now more than 800,000 independent voters recorded, increases political polarization and amplifies ideological extremes. The closed primaries are an arcanic and anti-democratic tool, and NYC is among the few American cities remaining to use them for the municipal elections. OP-ED argues that the proposal should be postponed, but it would certainly kill it. As has shown the last hearing of the Charter Revision Commission, New York progressive politicians firmly oppose the open primaries. Since the next mayor is likely to be Zohran Mamdani, the standard carrier of the progressive wing of the New York Democratic Party, there is no chance that the next commission, appointed by him, recommends changing. The first and last chance to vote on the proposal would have been in November. Ilya Kapovich

Great reading

Manhattan: I just read Stephen King’s “Never Trecch”. Smoke holy! Susan A. Stark

Unfaithful fan

Somers, NY: I’m not sure that the Steve Chaddock voiceless voice or can really be a fan of the Yankees. He thinks that dishes are a bad team. According to him, any team who needs a victory would like to play food – an absurd comment. With a file from 55-42 to July 17 and only half a match of first place, it is not a bad team. And with Kodai Senga and Sean Manaea, we have reliable starting staff. The top of their hitting order is one of the best. Their weakness can be the lower third of the order. They will also need aid from the enclosure of the lifts, but the deadline for exchanges is coming. So Steve, good to know that you are no longer a fan of food. This is not what a real fan does. Go visit the Bronx. Michael Gold

Artificial crusade

Wyckoff, NJ: Re “House Gopers Grill Cuny Leader on anti -Semitism” (July 16): when representative Elise Stefanik shows us her contemporary criticism of President Trump for having voluntarily dinner in her private house with vicious, vicious and non -flavored concerns. Until then, his protests are a transparent pretext for criticism of higher education. Marc Schaeffer

Apolitical entertainment

Brooklyn: The actor Chris Distefano restored my faith in the late evening television. He deposited Jimmy Kimmel for a few nights. The man was really funny – without ridiculizing Trump. Kimmel, on the other hand, is obsessed with the fun of Trump – and he is not funny! If ABC replaces Kimmel with distefano, I believe that their notes would go through the roof. We would be back to old days, when the jokes were funny. Josh Greenberger
