Two suspects have been arrested in the theft of the crown jewels from the Louvre Museum in Paris, one of whom was apprehended at Charles de Gaulle airport on Saturday evening, according to the Paris prosecutor’s office.

In a press release, Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau confirmed the two arrests. She also condemned the leak of information on this case, which, according to her, forced the authorities to reveal the facts prematurely and which, according to her, could hinder the work of more than 100 investigators “mobilized to recover the stolen jewelry and apprehend all the perpetrators”.

The brazen heist of the museum last Sunday stunned France, when four men, dressed as workers, smashed an upper floor window using a ladder on a moving truck. They cut out display cases with an electric saw and took away more than $100 million in royal jewelry dating from the reign of Emperor Napoleon III in the 19th century.

According to the newspaper Le Parisien, the men arrested are from the Paris suburbs. One of them was preparing to board a flight from Charles de Gaulle airport with some of the objects stolen from the Louvre. Another suspect was arrested later in the evening in Seine-Saint-Denis, north of Paris.

The French Minister of the Interior, Laurent Nunez, praised “the investigators who worked tirelessly, as I asked them, and who always had my full confidence”.
