British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has formed a new “special” ministerial committee to deal with the Iranian conflict. His behind-closed-doors efforts will coordinate the national response to the growing crisis in the Middle East through a series of serious talks, meetings and consultations.

We can therefore expect position papers to arrive at 10 Downing Street along with other subcommittees, a possibility in lieu of immediate action.

The move comes as Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron announced they would hold a Middle East summit in Paris on Friday to discuss a diplomatic solution to the Strait of Hormuz crisis.

THE Independent reports that the Westminster group – the Middle East Response Committee – already held its first meeting on Tuesday, focused on efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, the vital shipping route for global oil and gas supplies.

The outlet notes: “The prime minister created the committee to address the domestic and international impacts of the war, which has driven up energy prices, caused turmoil in stock markets and exposed deep divisions between the United States and its traditional European allies. »

A source told Independent the “new central structure” would focus on “medium-term scenario planning to respond to developments in the region over the coming weeks and months”, as Starmer uses uncertainty to forge closer ties with Europe.

The exact composition of the committee has not been revealed, but senior officials will meet under the chairmanship of Cabinet Secretary Dame Antonia Romeo.

Meetings, conferences and discussions leading up to further negotiations have defined Europe’s disjointed response to the Middle East conflict since it began about six weeks ago.

The glaring lack of action was noted in Washington.

The “high-level” events resulted in a lot of free words and advice to US President Donald Trump, but not much else.
