Texas Democrat says she’s locked inside state Capitol after refusing mandatory DPS escort
The representative of the democratic state Nicole Collier de Fort Worth returned to Texas Capitol Monday, but says that it remains locked inside the Capitol because it would not sign an authorization slip to be under escort by the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Escorts for all the Democrats in the Chamber who left the state of Texas last month – preventing a vote on a redistribution effort led by the GOP – are intended for a guarantee that they will return to the House on Wednesday at 10 am for the next special session.
CBS News Texas spoke with necklace via Zoom on Monday, and she said that the situation was wrong – just like the new Congress cards that she and other Democrats tried to block.
“I have the right to resist, I have the right to oppose, just like my voters, just as the Texans have the right to challenge the government, and that is what I do. I dispute these decisions that are taken. I do not agree with them,” said collar.
She continued, adding: “All the Democrats will work together to obtain this legal file so that we can fight this fight in court.”
Necklace also said that according to DPS, she had to stay in the houses of the house or inside her office in the Capitol.
CBS News Texas contacted DPS to comment.
In a statement, Texas House Democratic Caucus said that police escorts were the “last republican tactic to monitor and control Democratic legislators following their successful quorum rupture”.
Necklace and dozens of other Democrats in the Chamber who returned to the Capitol received on Monday a welcome from the size of the Texas of their supporters while they were walking from the rotunda in the house of the house a few minutes before the start of the room session around noon.
Democrats had fled to blue states earlier this month after President Trump suggested that the state is expected to restart its American chamber district to obtain more republican seats. The Democrats had remained outside the state to refuse the Texas Republican Governor, Greg Abbott, a quorum, temporarily disturbing a special legislative session that the governor called to reshape the cards of the State Congress.
The redistribution effort led by the GOP would create five other republican house seats before the mid-term of 2026. The Republicans currently have a narrow majority in the house.
Because the Democrats broke the quorum for two weeks, there were not enough members of the room to hold the special session. On Monday, 120 members were present on the ground, but 30 were still absent.
The representative Gene Wu, the president of the Caucus Democrat of the Chamber, said that their efforts to block the five potential seats of the Republicans had now passed in their second phase, the legal phase.
Monday evening, the selective committee of the room on the redistribution of the congress approved the new cards according to a margin of 12-8. The legislation goes to the full chamber which could vote on the cards on Wednesday.
The Texas Senate Rediscovery Committee approved the cards on Sunday, and the complete Senate will take them back this week.
