The captain has not been perfect, but his availability and consistency have once again been essential in trying to secure football in the Champions League.

Now the Dutchman is set to take a long-standing record from Jamie Carragher.
Van Dijk closes in on Carragher’s record
Liverpoolfc.com has confirmed that Van Dijk could make history if he faces Aston Villa at Villa Park.
The club said: “Virgil van Dijk is set to break a record held by Jamie Carragher for almost two decades when Liverpool visit Aston Villa.
“The captain has played 4,761 minutes in all competitions so far this season – the most of any Reds outfield player since Carragher (4,789) in 2007-08.
“Therefore, Van Dijk will exceed this mark if he plays for at least just under half an hour in his team’s final away match at Villa Park (8pm BST kick-off Friday).”
It’s a remarkable statistic when you consider the physical demands placed on a modern centre-back, particularly one playing in a Liverpool team which has looked so open at times this season.

Our No.4 has already made 53 appearances in all competitions this campaign, which is his highest total for the club since playing 51 times in 2021/22.
Van Dijk’s consistency responds to criticism
Carragher recently offered to play alongside Van Dijk in a modern Liverpool team, saying he would have done so “No problem” alongside the man he described as the best central defender in the Premier League.
This debate was always going to be of interest to supporters, as the two players represent very different eras of Liverpool’s defense.
It also makes Paul Scholes’ recent suggestion that Van Dijk hasn’t been world class over the last two years even more questionable.

The 34-year-old may not be quite the untouchable defender we watched him in his prime, but he remains the leader that Liverpool rely on more than anyone else at the back.
If Van Dijk surpasses Carragher’s minutes record against Aston Villa, it will serve as yet another reminder that greatness isn’t just about peak performance, it’s also about being there again and again when the team needs you.
