“I I would say it could be one of the worst games in my life, “Cooper Flagg told journalists on Thursday evening.” But we got victory, so that’s what really matters to me. “It was a statement revealing the 18-year-old basketball phenomenon after his first Las Vegas Summer League match. The NBA’s beginnings, he seemed determined to present a program: to chase his shot aggressively and look for dunks on every occasion.
He rebounded with 31 points during his second appearance (and finally final) of the summer league on Saturday. But it is the second half of his comment after the match on Thursday evening which summarizes why Flagg is one of the prospects of the most in force adolescents for decades: the kid is a winner.
The buzz around Flagg started in his Natal Maine, where he became the first recruit to win the Gatorade Player of the State Prize. He was transferred to Montverde Academy in Florida after his first year of high school in search of a more bleeding competition, and the distinctions continued to accumulate: the national player of the year all American of McDonald’s, even the male athlete of the year of the USA basketball, the youngest to win honor since the prize for his two skills in 1980. Reclassified to enter the college a year earlier – and did the same time to reach the NBA earlier. With each challenge eliminated, he looked for the next with an even greater emergency.

I haven’t thought about it too much,” he said. “I am sort of focused on each individual day and I try to improve myself. I know that I have a very long way to go, and a lot to improve. ”
“This objective is what stands out the most at Cooper,” says Cato. “Sometimes even to his detriment. When he says things like” I’m not really in music “, he just looks like a guy only consumed with basketball and challenging himself to reach new heights.”
Flagg could do much worse than finishing an approximate equivalent of Tatum, of course: a precious player among the first five who is removed a year from an NBA championship. It would probably be very satisfied with this trajectory (and it should be noted that the New Englander grew up with a fan of Celtics). But some initiates see an even higher ceiling. An NBA director told me that Flagg was “the most qualified and hardening perspective in one or the other of his summer league games”, adding: “He has a fairly strong case as a most complete player of 18 years since LeBron James.”
What impressed the most in the beginning of Flagg was not a single element. It was all: aggression, balance, basketball QI, defense, size, athletics. Flagg is about to make his official debut in the regular season in October as a contributor ready for his mouth and game with upward superstar. Against all expectations, a Mavericks organization a few months before Luka Dončić’s saga seems to have struck the lottery.
