Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has heaped praise on Virat Kohli after the RCB star’s record-breaking century in Raipur, saying that while discussions continue around the rise of the new generation of power hitters, Kohli has once again proven that “the old generation is still the best”.

Virat Kohli produced a stunning comeback after back-to-back ducks, and perhaps what made it even more special was that it came in a chase, something around which Kohli has built his legacy in world cricket. The RCB superstar responded in the most Virat Kohli way possible, smashing his ninth IPL century to guide Royal Challengers Bengaluru to a memorable chase of 193 against Kolkata Knight Riders in Raipur. This knock became another historic milestone in Kohli’s legendary career as he became the first Indian batter to score 10 T20 centuries and also the fastest player in the history of cricket to complete 14,000 T20 runs.

Speaking on Star Sports’ JioStar Cricket Live, Sunil Gavaskar highlighted Kohli’s unmatched ability in chasing targets and explained why his greatness goes beyond just power hitting.

“Virat Kohli knows how to build a chase better than most players in world cricket. What he has achieved and the way he conducts his innings will take a long time for anyone to match,” Gavaskar said.

“Virat Kohli was absolutely exceptional against KKR. He knows how to build a chase better than anyone. When it comes to T20 centuries, he is third on the list with 10, behind Chris Gayle and Babar Azam. But he is the fastest with 14,000 T20 runs and has nine IPL hundreds. Records are there to be broken, but it will take a long time for anyone to match what Kohli continues to deliver, game after game, season after season,” added Gavaskar.

“While everyone was talking about the ‘Gen Next’ season, Kohli showed that he is still here. He silenced the doubters with a century and moved to third place in the Orange Cap race. He proved that the older generation is still the best. Even though the young stars are taking center stage, the experienced greats are not done yet. This Virat Kohli hundred was one of those special moments that remind us of his greatness,” he concluded.
